What's A-Parent

Mom Captures The Chaos And Beauty Of Motherhood In Her Honest Photo Series

"Motherhood is using your shirt to wipe runny noses and dirty faces."

What's A-Parent is a series highlighting those who get real about the hardships that come with raising kids. These often untold stories help show parents they are not alone in their struggle, and are doing an amazing job.

While some staged images of families may capture a rare moment of order and happiness, photographer Giedre Gomes decided  to depict motherhood how she experiences it on a daily basis — chaos, tantrums, love, beauty, and all.

To accomplish this, Gomes drew from her own experiences and photographed her friend's families as well.  "I wanted to show what Mother's Day looks like from my experience," Gomes tells A Plus in an email. Gomes's photos show mothers dealing with multiple children at once while shopping, using the bathroom, doing laundry, sleeping and more.

"Motherhood is not remembering what it's like to get a full night's sleep, wiping more poop than you ever thought you'd see in your life," she writes on Bored Panda. "Motherhood is no longer having privacy, never peeing or showering in peace. Motherhood is using your shirt to wipe runny noses and dirty faces. Motherhood is learning how to do everything with one hand while carrying a baby in another."

"Motherhood is waking up with a little butt or foot in your face. Motherhood is breastfeeding whenever, wherever. Motherhood is yoga pants and bad hair days. Motherhood is no longer shopping alone. Motherhood is having a filthy car all the time. Motherhood is not being able to call in sick because it's a 24/7 job without a paycheck and the list goes on. But in the end, I wouldn't have it any other way. Being a mom means being completely and totally overwhelmed by love, joy, responsibility, and selflessness."

But Gomes tells A Plus she isn't looking for people to tell her she's a "super mom."

"That wasn't the message," she says, adding that her professional photography style is totally different. "All of my photo shoots are outdoors, mainly kids, some families and maternity pictures. but I enjoy photographing kids," she says, adding that her own kids inspired her to start photography in the first place.

"Ever since my oldest was born, I didn't put my camera down. I wanted (and still do) to remember every moment, every milestone — because kids grow up way too fast. I'm gonna continue to let my kids come sleep with me, because in a few years they probably won't even want me to come to their room. I'm gonna enjoy every minute of this motherhood."

And while she says she will continue to arrange those "cute," "dreamy and beautiful" photoshoots, she hopes that this series will show her funnier side.

Gomes also has a message to those that think her series is staged: "Of course I am not gonna go hide in my neighbor's house and wait till she goes to the bathroom," Gomes says. "Kids on the other [hand], they can't act. They did take their diapers off and wanted to take a bath."

Finally, Gomes knows that her series reminds people that stay-at-home moms indeed have a tough job: "We don't get a day off ... ever. It's hard work," she tells BuzzFeed.
