Lady Gaga's 'Joanne' Music Video Is A Beautiful Tribute To Her Aunt She Never Got To Meet

Lady Gaga's music videos are known for serving us iconic looks, catchy dance moves, and jaw-dropping theatrics — but, with her latest, she switches things up and takes us on a stripped-down and emotional journey. With a piano version of her song "Joanne," Gaga beautifully pays tribute to the aunt she unfortunately never met and whose middle name she calls her own.

Before the clip actually begins, text appears onscreen telling viewers that Joanne was Gaga's aunt on her father's side who died from the autoimmune disease lupus when she was 19 years old. Gaga's father, Joe, was only 15 at the time. From then until the very end, when Gaga sings the final lyrics "XOXO, Joanne" and the dedication appears, it's clear this is a visual love letter.

Throughout the music video, our eyes are treated to stunningly timeless cinematography as Gaga — in black-and-white as well as color-filled scenes — plays instruments, traipses through the woods, and sings her heart out. She showcases dreamy vocals, backed only by a piano, and really lets the music speak for itself. It may just be the most beautiful thing Gaga has ever created.

With Gaga set to perform at the 2018 Grammys this weekend — where she is nominated for two awards this year, bringing her number of nominations up to 19 with six wins thus far — many suspect "Joanne" will be the artist's song of choice. Only time will tell but, in the meantime, Gaga is changing lives, as she donated to the Lupus Research Alliance in honor of her late aunt.
