John Legend Releases Uplifting 'Love Me Now' Video At An Important Time

"Love is universal ... and it will ultimately win over hate."

John Legend released his new music video for "Love Me Now" on Friday. It arrives at a difficult time for many people following Donald Trump's election as president of the United States.

Legend addressed the timing in an Instagram post announcing the video last week. "We didn't think about the election when we planned the release date for this song and video," he wrote alongside a photo of himself with his wife Chrissy Teigen and their baby daughter Luna. "But in this time of conflict and uncertainty, it's clear that we all need more love."

Legend, who appears in the video with his family, went on to emphasize the importance of showing love "to people who may not look like us or live like us," and who may be "marginalized and rejected, feared and left behind." That's always an important message to remember, but it feels especially crucial now.

The video depicts couples from around the world — "from Standing Rock to Iraq, from Orlando to the [Dominican Republic]" — who represent the incredible power of love. As the video's director Nabil Elderkin said in a statement, "This video shows how love can be shared in some of the most difficult situations on Earth in which the human spirit and connection with each other prevails."

"Love is universal," Legend wrote on Instagram. "We all need it. We all can give it. And it will ultimately win over hate. I have to believe that." He encouraged fans to use the hashtag #lovemenow to share pictures of themselves and their loved ones.
