In A New Video, Grace Vanderwaal Sings One Of The First Songs She Ever Performed Live

"The last time I sang this was … at that coffee shop open mic night."

"'Riptide' was one of the very first songs that I sang," Grace VanderWaal says at the start of her live performance at Brooklyn Art Library. She's referring to Vance Joy's 2014 song, which has also been covered by artists such as Taylor Swift and Noah Cyrus.

VanderWaal has, of course, covered countless hits since then and released her own music, too, such as her recent tracks "City Song" and "So Much More Than This" off her 2017 album, Just The Beginning.

But in this special performance, VanderWaal takes us back, covering "Riptide" on her ukelele. "I think the last time I sang this was when I used to sing at that coffee shop open mic night."

We think VanderWaal's voice lends itself perfectly to "Riptide" and we're certainly happy she's brought it all back for us to hear.

"You [and your] voice are amazing," one person comments on the performance, uploaded to YouTube. "You're my inspiration, I hope you'll continue singing and playing the ukulele the rest of your life."
