Purchasing This Pouch Not Only Helps Protect Your Skin, It Helps Protect The Oceans, Too

"It’s our duty to save the planet."

Clairity is a series introducing readers to new fashion and beauty products from brands our host, Claire Peltier, believes in. These products not only help readers look and feel good, but have a positive impact on the world, the environment, and hopefully the user's self-image, too.

It's no secret sunscreen helps protect our skin, but what if it could help protect our oceans, too?

To make this happen, and to celebrate World Oceans Day in June, COOLA founder and CEO Chris Birchby partnered with fashion designer Cynthia Rowley to release a limited edition, water-resistant pouch filled with pesticide-free suncare products: COOLA's Mineral Sport Lotion with SPF 30, Rōsilliance SPF 30 BB+ Cream, a Mineral SPF 50 Sport Stick, and a Mineral Liplux in SPF 30. One hundred percent of the proceeds for the pouches go toward Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit organization creating science-based solutions to protect our oceans.

To learn more about this project, and why it's so important we work toward saving our oceans, we caught up with Birchby.

According to the COOLA website, the ocean generates half the oxygen on the planet and "creates the rain that feeds our crops and forests, provides our fresh water and feeds millions of people around the world." It is so important we protect it from rising carbon emissions, which is causing a combination of stressors. "Warming ocean temperatures, melting sea ice, and ocean acidification are affecting our ocean, wildlife, and coastal communities right now. In fact, we're changing the ocean's acidity 50 times faster than ever before," it says on the website.

Mankind clearly has a stake in protecting the ocean, but Bichby has a personal one as well.

"As an avid surfer, the ocean is an integral part of my life and I'm passionate about its conservation. I've spent most of my life in the ocean, on both the East and West Coast," Birchby tells A Plus in an email. "Since government funding for ocean conservation is dwindling, we think it's time for companies to stand up and advocate for change. The ocean is a complex system, and it is facing some complex problems. We've got some serious issues ahead if we don't shape up!"

Birchby says the collaboration with Rowley came together quite naturally as both share this passion for ocean protection. When asked why it's so important for those in fashion and beauty industries to take a stand, Birchby puts it simply.

"As citizens and companies, it’s our job to be the change we want to see in the world. It’s time for companies to stand up and advocate for change. It’s our duty to save the planet."

"I think that it’s necessary for one small voice to speak up," Birchby adds. "Once someone is brave enough to stand up to something, others will follow. It’s all about passion!"
