These Photos Capture Fatherhood In All Its Messy, Chaotic, Beautiful Glory

A more honest side of parenting.

This June, A Plus is celebrating Father's Day and the release of the film One Last Thing, with a cavalcade of dad stories, videos and — of course — jokes. Catch the film online.

Last month, we spoke with photographer Giedre Gomes about her photo series showcasing the reality of motherhood. Now, in honor of Father's Day in June, Gomes has now come out with a new series highlighting fatherhood in all its beautiful, chaotic glory, too.

Gomes, whose professional photography typically shows families and their children in staged scenarios, felt that it was also important to show the more honest side of family life. So, she worked with her own family, as well as her friends' families, to capture the real side of parenting.

In her latest series, Gomes tells A Plus that she chose to highlight different types of fathers to call attention to all the amazing adoptive dads and stepfathers out there. "You don't have to be a biological father to be a great dad," she said.

Gomes's fatherhood scenes showcase everything from a father getting his makeup done by his kids, to leading children on bicycles, teaching a daughter to fish, changing diapers, and more.

"I can't really pick my favorite scene," Gomes tells us. "Really all [of the] dads were amazing."

"Now that I am a mother myself, I watch my husband, my friends' husbands, and see how they interact with their children. I catch myself comparing them with my own father. It's funny how different they all are, but at the end, they love their children unconditionally," Gomes explains on Bored Panda

"I tried to show as many different types of dads as I could possibly think of and give a funny twist to it. Maybe you can relate to some of them too."

Gomes notes that it's interesting to look at the types of feedback she's received on her fatherhood series in comparison to the motherhood series. The fatherhood series received mostly positive feedback, whereas people were quick to judge the motherhood series.

"I received many negative comments about how moms are complaining about being moms [or] about the work that they need to do," Gomes tells us. They say "why even choose to be a mom if it's 'so hard'."

"Lots of mom-shaming for sure," she adds.

Perhaps one reason people are more quick to celebrate dads is because of their general low expectations of men's roles as caretakers to begin with. When dads exceed these already low expectations by even the slightest, they are overly celebrated. Really, however, they are just fulfilling their everyday parenting duties — things moms do every day, but are rarely celebrated for. Perhaps when people start to see fathers as having equal care-taking abilities as moms, the mom-shaming will stop, and the over celebration of fathers for doing the bare minimum will taper.

This point is reflected in a viral Facebook post by mom Kristina Kuzmic, who says, "No parent is perfect. That goes for both moms and dads. And if men talked about moms the way women talk about dads, it would be considered completely unacceptable. So let's make it unacceptable to label an entire gender as inadequate. And dads, please know that you matter!!"

Gomes's photo series is a window into what real fatherhood looks like, and shows that, oftentimes, it's not all that different from motherhood. No one gender should be expected to take on any more or less than other. Whatever works for that particular family is the best parenting style there is.
