This Guy Recreates Famous Artworks By Painting Them With LEGO Figures Instead Of People

LEGOs make everything better.

Italian artist Stefano Bolcato is putting a bright yellow twist on some iconic paintings.

In his project titled People, Bolcato recreates portraits painted by world-renowned artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Andy Warhol, and Frida Kahlo using LEGO figures instead of people. While some of his artworks look like photos of LEGOs, each one is skillfully painted using oil on canvas.

"The decision to revisit the famous paintings took place in a natural way, as a tribute to the things that I think are important for me and who have contributed to my growth, stimulated my creativity, contributing to the formation of my cultural and artistic sensibility," Bolcato told A Plus.

LEGOs were Bolcato's favorite toy as a child and his appreciation for them has continued on into adulthood. Bolcato's choice to use vivid colors and a beloved toy transforms the traditional paintings into a work of art that taps into a childlike world. As a result, his mix of classic and contemporary pieces become works that both adults and kids can appreciate.

"I have observed that many people have appreciated this work. My paintings are an easy, effective way to engage and bring new audiences to museums and art history," Bolcato said. "It stimulates children and young people to get closer to the artworks of the great masters of art history and know them better."

Bolcato hopes his creative, fun artworks will help to inspire others. "I hope that many more people understand that art is a living material that can be shaped, each of us can make a contribution in creating new visions. New perspectives are always possible," he said. "You can start from a great artwork of the past and invent a new one, even if it is in the most important museum in the world."
