There's a new craze where people are turning their old Pokémon cards — you know, those things you have stored in boxes somewhere or neatly organized in a safe place — and transforming them into beautiful works of art. One such person doing this is Lunumbra, an artist who graduated from Berea College in May 2016 with a degree in studio arts, and currently lives in Lexington, Ky.

"So why Pokemon cards? I have a deep affection for Pokemon. [I] started playing when Red and Blue came out. My favorite game would have to be Crystal, since I was finally old enough to read and actually enjoy the story line." Lunumbra writes on Tumblr.

Lunumbra also explains that it's their dream to make a decent living being an artist — even if that means only doing Pokémon cards. Well, Lunumbra has certainly done that as the Poké artist currently makes $1,590 per month via Patreon thanks to the support of 121 patreons.

So how does Lunumbra do this, exactly? They explain — in addition to showing us how it's done on YouTube — the entire process, which takes about an hour per card, in a simplistic way.

"Normally, a card has a tiny rectangle of art where the Pokemon is pictured — I use acrylics to bring that background out of the frame to cover the entire card," Lunumbra says on Patreon. "Each card takes roughly an hour to complete depending on difficulty. I then gloss each card and sign it and add small touches like metallic ink to really bring out the card's beauty. Each card I do is one-of-a-kind, even if I work with the same card multiple times — I try to make each as unique as possible."

Lunumbra is very active on Facebook, with posting photos of their work, and Twitch, where they live stream their work multiple times a week.
