This Bold Shadow Art Will Surprise You In The Places You Least Expect

“It’s more fun when you come around a corner and see an unexpected monster pop up on the sidewalk."

Don't be scared of this artist's shadows.

Artist Damon Belanger takes to the streets of Redwood City in California to create a series of shadows extending from everyday objects. This includes shadows of smiling flowers, robots, and monkeys, among other characters, poking out from bike racks, parking meters, fences, and beyond.

"The theme here is shadows," Belanger says in a 2016 interview for KQED. "I've taken that to mean transformation and the unexpected. You don't pay much attention to shadows unless you see something unexpected."

Furthermore, he hopes people find them by accident.

"It's more fun when you come around a corner and see an unexpected monster pop up on the sidewalk," he tells the San Francisco Chronicle

The genius series, commissioned by The Redwood City Improvement Association, has since made Belanger a winner of the 2017 HOW International Design Awards

Belanger's other work includes the series A Long Memory, Junk Pilot, and Strength and Motion, all of which are shown on his website. Belanger's work has also been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States, as well as in magazines and comic books.
