Las Vegas Shoe Company To Cover Funeral Costs For Victims Of Mass Shooting

The Las Vegas-based retailer Zappos has pledged to cover the cost of funerals for every family affected by the mass shooting last week

Initially, Zappos said it would match donations from the public up to $1 million. After receiving more than $350,000 in donations for that fund, Steven Bautista, who leads the Zappos charity program, told the Las Vegas Sun that the company is planning to help with funeral arrangements as well.

"We saw there was a need that our current efforts couldn't fill," Bautista told A Plus. "These families needed support and assistance immediately and donation funds, while very important, are not always able to act as quickly as the recipients need. Essentially, we recognized that there was more we could do, so we acted on it."

Already, the company has distributed about $20,000 from its own coffers — not from the donated money — to help three different families cover funeral costs. They're not alone in the local Las Vegas community, either: Freed's Bakery raised $18,000 by donating cupcakes and Atomic Liquors donated $30,000. Other Las Vegas residents have stepped up in different ways: there was a massive turnout to donate blood, a "healing garden" was built by community members, and therapy dogs were brought in for residents to spend time with.

In some cases the company has been sending the money directly to funeral homes to help transport bodies from Nevada back home. But Zappos' work isn't done.

"We're currently in talks to first responders and hospitals to see how we can help them," Bautista said. "We've organized employees donating blood, food drop-offs, and various volunteer efforts. Sometimes it comes down to simply replacing a pair of shoes for the hospital staff working on the night of the tragedy. It's hard to tell just how far and expansive the need is right now but we'll be there for our city in whatever way we can."

You can donate to Zappos' Las Vegas fund here. Any and all of those 58 families are welcome to reach out to for more information on getting help with funeral proceedings.
