19 Comics That Illustrate What Being Transgender Can Be Like

"It's hard to go through life knowing others can't see the real you."

Los Angeles-based artist Julia Kaye is documenting her experience as a transgender woman by creating comics that show her experiences. Although each one is personal to her, Kaye's experiences in her comics are familiar and relatable to other trans people.

The 28-year-old posts her work on her Instagram @upandoutcomic. From the importance of not outing transgendered people to others to how it feels to remove old pictures from social media, Kaye's comics give people an open and honest look at some of the challenges and triumphs transgender people face.

"I found making them to be therapeutic," Kaye told Mashable. "It got me to set aside time at the end of my day to reflect on how I was feeling. And because I was making the comics for myself, I allowed myself to be more honest than I might have been otherwise."

She hopes her comics will help to bring support to other trans people as well as bring awareness to some of their experiences.
