7 Types Of Best Friends To Celebrate Today, Tomorrow, And Every Day After

June 8 is National Best Friends Day.

"If friends were flowers, I'd pick you." You've probably heard that saying time and time again, but on this day, National Best Friends Day, that phrase remains top of mind for many. While every day could be considered Best Friends Day, June 8 stands as an especially special day to celebrate the family we've chosen for ourselves. Best friends help us learn and grow as we form unbreakable bonds that last a lifetime. In fact, friendship has the capacity to change the course of our lives. Whether you're still BFFs with your childhood pal, or your parent doubles as your confidant, here are ways to celebrate National Best Friends Day no matter your relationship.

Recommended

1. For those who've been best friends since childhood ...

While plenty of people have come and gone from your life over the years, your childhood best friend has remained by your side for decades — literally. You two grew up together. And, while you've had your rough patches, the good has always outweighed the bad. To celebrate your lifelong friendship, get together and revisit your favorite places to hang out as children. Swing on the swings at your old elementary school playground, visit the old corner store, and reminisce about all the good times you've had.

2. For those who became best friends during college ...

During your college days, you two were inseparable. You lived together, you studied together, and you partied together. And even though things have certainly changed since your time on campus, you two have grown and evolved together, too. On this day, celebrate your enduring friendship by recreating your early 20s. Stuff your faces full of pizza, then put on your best outfit and paint the town ed. If dancing the night away isn't what it once was, head home early for an old-fashioned slumber party!

3. For those best friends who are miles apart, but close at heart ...

Despite the fact that you and your best friend ended up living in separate cities, your bond remains unbreakable. Yet, while you can go weeks at a time without chatting and still maintain that closeness, now's the time to make sure they realize how much you care and need them in your life. If they live far away, but not too far, surprise them with an impromptu visit. If they live far away and you can't make the trek, surprise them via video chat. They'll be happy to see your face, even if only virtually.

4. For the inseparable parent-child duo that's joined at the hip ...

Everyone has that one somebody on whom they can always rely. Yours just happens to be responsible for bringing you into this world, too. In fact, you and your parent are such good friends, strangers often confuse you for siblings instead. If you still live near your parent, surprise them with their favorite take-out so they don't have to slave over a hot stove for one evening. If you live too far away to visit, call them up and binge watch something together and heckle the program long-distance.

5. For the siblings who've been best friends since before they could read ...

Whether you still live in the same house, or you haven't seen each other in ages, today's the perfect day to reconnect with your built-in best friend for life. Sure, you and your sibling share the same DNA, but over the years, you've shared laughter and tears, too. If your sibling lives nearby, spend the day at the zoo you loved when you were kids. If your sibling lives too far away, actively make plans to visit one another or plan a trip someplace you've both wanted to go so you can make new memories.

6. For those who are best friends even after the clock strikes 5 ...

Even though you don't enjoy your job all that much, you're willing to commute to the office every morning because you know your work BFF will be there to greet you with fresh coffee each day. Return the favor by inviting them out for drinks or dinner after work and get to know each other better outside the confines of your cubicle. After all, it's already hard enough to make friends as an adult. Why not extend a hand and embrace someone who could become a lifelong BFF?

7. For those who've become BFFs because their kids are BFFs, too ...

Why should your kids have all the fun? You and your BFF have gotten to know each other pretty well as you watch your little ones run around the playground all afternoon. But it's about time you both put down the juice boxes and Goldfish crackers and trade them for something a bit more decadent. Call your favorite babysitter and use this free time to indulge yourselves with a tasty lunch and relaxing massage. After years of wading through Pampers, you deserve to pamper yourselves!
