The Moving Reason Trevor Noah Thanked Jim Carrey In A Recent Award Speech

"I found a way to build a community."

On Friday, Daily Show host Trevor Noah accepted the Comedy Person of the Year Award at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. During his speech, he took a moment to thank fellow comedian Jim Carrey, although not for the reasons you might expect.

Instead of simply gushing about Carrey's onscreen talent, Noah addressed an issue that affects many people in the comedy community — depression. Noah explained that Carrey's openness about his own mental health helped him to better understand his own.

"You can't win at comedy. Every comedian knows, you're going to have your good days, you're going to have your bad days, but you don't win," Noah said, according to Page Six. "Winning is getting to the end without committing suicide, and Jim Carrey was one of the first comedians that described the beast that many of us face in this room and that's depression."

"I didn't know what that thing was," Noah continued. "I just thought I liked sleeping for weeks on end sometimes, and then I read [Carrey's] story and I was like, 'Oh s–t, that's what's going on,' and I thank you because, you know, I found a way to fight it. I found a way to build a community and that's what this place is, it's a community of people trying to do something."

To make things even more heartwarming, Noah also got a chance to meet Carrey, who was in attendance at the event to receive the Generation Award. The 33-year-old posted a photo of the two of them on Instagram over the weekend and shared how much the moment meant to him.

"I cannot lie I am living my dream. I never dreamed I would ever meet some of the people who shaped how I saw funny in the world," Noah wrote in the caption. "I also never dreamed I would be on the same stage as them receiving an award! Thank you Jim Carrey for being as amazing in person as you've always been on screen. And thank you my friend @wkamaubell [comedian W. Kamau Bell] for being in this picture and also in my life!"
