Singer Writes Powerful Letter To Her 1-Year-Old Daughter To Show Her Love And Acceptance Is Key

"Be resilient and let the rain of judgments and insults slide down your umbrella of indifference."

Singer, dancer, and actress Teyana Taylor recently caught our attention when she admirably spoke proudly of her post-baby body. Now, it's the words she has for her daughter that are inspiring us.

On Instagram, Taylor posted a black-and-white photo of herself with her 1-year-old daughter Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr., who she affectionately calls "Junie." She captioned the image with a letter that expressed her high hopes and advice for Junie. She started the message by conveying just how much her daughter means to her.

"Since your first breath, life has become so much more. Everything makes so much sense now. You are my motivation and you bring the greatness out in me," she wrote. "You are my heart. I knew at first glance that it was love. As we gazed into each other's eyes and you thanked me for life, all I could think of is how much I should be thanking you. Not a tear from you as we watched your father cry."

Then, she shared some of the challenges Junie might face as she grows up, and gives her some advice for succeeding in spite of it all.

"As you grow older, you will understand that life is a long road that you cannot travel without having people pointing fingers at you. We live in a world where people have the right to their opinions, however you have the right to refuse them as your truth. People only have as much power as you give them. Remember that. Be resilient and let the rain of judgments and insults slide down your umbrella of indifference," Taylor continued. "Bug, you have the ability to operate at a whole new level of permission for yourself. Never dim your light so that others can handle your brightness. Refuse to be objectified because of your race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Define your success, not by the words of others, but by the work, efforts, love and faith that you will pour into all of the things that you do."

The letter then touches on a topic extremely relevant in today's political climate. Taylor advises her daughter to be tolerant, compassionate, and embrace diversity.

"In a world in which some leaders choose to exploit people's ignorance and create anxiety, reject their claims. Our lack of understanding of others and lack of open mindedness is what promotes division, rejection, hatred, fear and blame," she wrote.

She finished the letter by reminding her daughter that she can achieve anything and telling her that she looks forward to seeing Junie grow and develop.

The heartwarming letter has since been liked over 225,000 times since it was posted just six days ago. Many people commented on it to say that they found it to be incredibly beautiful and inspiring.

Taylor's words make it clear that she hopes to raise her daughter as someone with a strong sense of self-worth, who never feels limited by her gender or the color of her skin. We hope that others who read her letter will heed her advice in their own lives.
