Teens Are Raiding Their Mom's Closets To Re-Wear Their Prom Dresses Decades Later

This prom season, we've already seen a teen sew her dress the night before, a teen bring her Harvard acceptance letter as her date, and a teen show up to prom in a Black Lives Matter inspired gown. We love seeing this kind of creativity and activism from high schoolers, and we're also excited by a new trend they're starting this year: Teens are proudly re-wearing their mother's (or grandmother's) prom dresses decades later.

The trend is not only a sweet tribute to their moms, but is a great way to help the environment by repurposing old clothes to reduce fashion pollution. Plus, it saves time and money.

Eighteen-year-old Ally Johnson proudly put on her mom's dress from 1995 to wear to her own senior prom.

"I tried it on and it fit perfectly," Johnson TODAY. "It didn't need any alterations. I just loved it from the second I tried it on."

"People were shocked, they didn't think that could have been my mom's senior prom dress," Johnson said. "It was back in style. It's a vintage, old Hollywood look."

Johnson's grandmother actually picked the dress out for Ally's mother, Lori Johnson, to wear in 1995 and she was the one who has been holding on to it since.

"I knew she was keeping it, but it's funny, she said, 'Well, you never know, maybe one day you'll have a daughter and she'll wear it. I never thought that would come to fruition,'" Lori told TODAY. "It just made me so happy, because we're very much alike anyway, and seeing her wear it took me back to when I went to prom and thinking about her growing up and now she's going to prom."

But Ally isn't the one to shop in her mom's — or grandma's — closet. Many teen girls have found their mom's dresses to be a perfect fit and timeless style for their prom. To make things even sweeter, some of them are recreating the poses their moms made in their prom photos.

You can check out some of their re-worn looks below.

"Wore the dress my mum made when she was 17. In 1987. And wore it to my senior ball last weekend (2017)," Bekah Hancox wrote on Facebook

"First worn in 1962 - last worn in 2013. Mother, two daughters and one grand daughter," Bev Tippett wrote on Facebook

"My daughter ordered a pretty gown online for her Senior Prom this year, and when it arrived, it wasn't what she had hoped...4 days away from prom, she decided to raid my closet while I was at work, took it to alterations. Who knew that my USMC ball dress from 1995 would see the light of day again. To be honest, I have no idea how this dress hung on through all of our many moves across the country and overseas! But one thing is certain....She Wore It Best!" Hope Buzzell-Bates wrote on Facebook

"My little sister decided to wear my mom's prom dress for her prom this year and it's making me so emotional," Troy Young wrote on Twitter.

"Me (2017) in my mom's junior prom dress (1996)," Aidan Whittemore wrote on Twitter.

"1989 is like, super in right now," Maya Rosenberg wrote on Facebook
