These Teens Paid Lovely Tribute To Barack And Michelle Obama For Prom

It all started with a punny promposal.

It's prom season, so we've been seeing plenty of creative promposals and fabulous dresses. But we don't think we've ever seen a prom experience quite like the one Cassie Berta and Seth Moffitt just had.

The Iowa teens definitely had a theme going on, but instead of simply matching colors, they chose to pay tribute to two people they admire — Barack and Michelle Obama. As Berta told Buzzfeed, "He's the president we grew up with, and we admire the Obamas for their strength, humility, and composure during their years in office."

It all started when Moffitt asked Berta to be his date using a sign that read, "I don't wanna go to prom OBAMA self."

When prom night rolled around, the pair wore outfits modeled after the Obamas' looks for the 36th Kennedy Center Honors in 2013, when the president wore a sharp tuxedo and the first lady donned a green off-the-shoulder Marchesa gown.

Berta told Teen Vogue she found the dress on a site called The Celebrity Dresses, which recreates pieces worn by famous people. (If you want to channel Mrs. Obama for your own event, the dress is now on sale for $159.99.) Moffitt, meanwhile, made sure to accessorize his tux with a flag pin on the lapel.

As Berta told the magazine, "We only hoped we could capture some of their slay!"

BuzzFeed points out that Moffitt shared the photos on his Tumblr page, where it has earned more than 34,000 notes. Users were especially happy to see that the teens had channeled the White House's first Black couple with such respect.

That's something the pair seems to have taken into consideration when they planned the looks.

"There is a fine line between white people appreciating and appropriating POC culture, specifically black culture," Berta told the site.

Now all that's left is for the Obamas themselves to see the looks. Based on Twitter, Moffitt seems to be waiting with bated breath.
