How Spotify Is Standing In Solidarity With DACA Recipients Facing An Uncertain Future

"I stand with Dreamers ... to be recognized as the Americans they are."

What do folks like Camila Cabello, Jared Leto, Becky G, Logic, and Demi Lovato have in common? They are part of a Spotify playlist that is rallying support for DACA recipients, a group of approximately 800,000 undocumented immigrants protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — a program Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced yesterday President Donald Trump's administration plans to end.

DACA is an Obama-era American immigration policy that went into effect as an executive order and gave refuge for those who came to the United States illegally as children (prior to their 16th birthday). It gave them the ability to obtain a renewable, two-year temporary deportation protection as well as a work permit — should they meet the requirements. The pressure will now be on Congress to replace DACA with new protection by the time it expires on March 5, 2018. Should it not be replaced, everyone from medical students to a Houston paramedic who helped out in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey would lose their protected status and could face deportation.

With the tech world voicing its opposition to rescinding DACA and putting people's lives in danger, Spotify has stepped up its game and launched a playlist titled "No Moment For Silence" that features songs from immigrant artists, artists of immigrant backgrounds who were born in the U.S., or just those who are voicing their support for DACA recipients. In addition to featuring their music, some also contributed personal and uplifting messages.

"As an immigrant who came to the U.S. as a child, I know what it's like to struggle and to never take any opportunity that came my way for granted," Cabello said. "I stand with Dreamers who have fought so hard to be recognized as the Americans they are."

"I encourage each and every one of you to support and stand for immigration," Lovato said. "For everyone out there who is fighting for this cause, I encourage you to stay strong."
