'Sesame Street' Parodies Song Of Summer 'Despacito' And Teaches Us How To Say Rubber Duckie In Spanish

"Oh, el patito, es mi favorito."

Leave it to Sesame Street to take on the undisputed Song of Summer 2017, a non-English song that has been taking the charts by storm for quite some time now: "Despacito." To give it that beloved Muppet spin, we see Ernie singing about his rubber duckie — much to Bert's dismay — with the help of Rosita to give us "El Patito."

The song stats out in English, with Ernie singing about the connection he has with his rubber duckie, how it can always brighten up the day. Bert is not a fan. "Oh no, not this song again!" he exclaims, perhaps nodding to the fact the song is the second-longest-running No. 1 hit in the Billboard Hot 100's history, with the potential to become the biggest in the coming weeks.

Eventually, we see Rosita join in on the fun and help give it a Spanish vibe. Rosita, a blue muppet who hails from Mexico, first appeared on Sesame Street back in 1991 and was only the second bilingual character introduced. Along with Ernie, the two sing about "el patito."

Spanish lyrics:

Oh, el patito, es mi favorito.
Donde quiera que vaya hace su sonido.
El patito es tu buen amigo.

English translation:

Oh, the rubber duckie, it's my favorite.
Wherever you go you make your sound.
The rubber duckie is your good friend.

Given the fact that Sesame Street has been known to parody pop culture phenomenons — such as an Orange Is the New Black sketch about healthy snacks as well as a Real Housewives spoof about handling drama appropriately — it's great that it's using this opportunity to normalize bilingualism, especially in music, for its young viewers.

"Hey, that song's actually pretty catchy," Bert says at the end of the clip, becoming a fan of the tune after all. Welcome to the world of catchy pop music — it transcends language itself.
