When Serena Williams Missed Her Daughter's First Steps, Fellow Moms Knew Just What To Say

"She is practicing so you can see the real ones."

When tennis star Serena Williams shared her sadness over missing a milestone in her baby daughter's development, fellow moms on Twitter wasted no time showing their support. As it turns out, Williams is far from alone in her experience.

Over the weekend, the athlete tweeted that her daughter Alexis (named after Williams' husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian) "took her first steps," adding, "I was training and missed it. I cried." Williams is currently competing in Wimbledon, in the hope of winning her eighth title at the tournament.

Williams' disappointment over missing this exciting moment is understandable, but moms on Twitter were quick to reassure her that motherhood isn't defined by catching every "first" in her daughter's life. In fact, many of her followers were in a similar boat, whether they worked outside of the home or not.

Alison Bender, who is reporting on the World Cup in Russia, tweeted that she saw her own daughter's first steps in a video, and reminded Williams that Alexis will "be proud of you" when she's older. Meanwhile, another follower who is a housewife missed it because she was simply in another room. "Please don't feel bad," she wrote.

Other users insisted that nothing is really a "first" until a child's mother sees it. Fellow famous mom Chrissy Teigen tweeted, "She is practicing so you can see the real ones." Another user provided a daughter's perspective, sharing that, although she wasn't sure if her late mother saw her first steps, seeing her working "made me strong, resilient & showed me how to be independent."

The responses were a beautiful display of mothers supporting each other. As singer Pink tweeted last year after an emotional encounter with a fellow mom at the grocery store, "I wish us mamas could give ourselves and each other a break."
