The Empowering Reason Serena Williams Chose To Wear A Catsuit At The French Open

"If I can do it, so can you."

Tennis superstar Serena Williams made a statement at the French Open this week by wearing a black Nike catsuit on the court. As it turns out, the outfit choice carried powerful meaning — not only for her but also for her fellow moms.

Williams told the press that the catsuit made her feel "like a warrior princess" or a "queen from Wakanda," the fictional African nation in Black Panther. "I always wanted to be a superhero, and it's kind of my way of being a superhero," she added. "I feel like a superhero when I wear it."

The athlete, who gave birth to her first child last year, also shared her hope that the outfit would inspire other mothers, especially those who have experienced health difficulties like she did.

"It feels like this suit represents all the women that have been through a lot mentally, physically, with their body to come back and have confidence and to believe in themselves," she said, according to People. As she added on Instagram, "For all the moms out there who had a tough recovery from pregnancy—here you go. If I can do it, so can you."

Williams has been open about the health complications she experienced after giving birth to her daughter Alexis. That included blood clots which left her bedridden for six weeks. She has since used her experience to advocate for mothers who are less fortunate.

As Williams explained, her French Open outfit was also the right choice for her health. "I've been wearing pants, in general, a lot when I play so I can keep the blood circulation going," Williams said, according to Today. "So it's a fun suit but it's also functional, so I can be able to play without any problems."

According to USA Today, Williams also announced a new fashion line of her own this week. She described the designs as being "for all the ladies out there being awesome."
