Selena Gomez Wants Girls To Know They're More Than A Like Or Comment On Social Media

Selena Gomez is the most-followed person on Instagram, so it only makes sense that she'd be the best person to give young women advice about handling the social media-obsessed world we live in.

Through her work with both Stand Up and Coach, the pop star recently stopped by a Los Angeles-based high school to spend some time with a lucky group of students. Gomez, who said she's always tried to live by example and has high hopes for these kids.

"I want them to see that they're able to have the same dreams and same goals," Gomez told Today's Sheinelle Jones. "There's so much pressure now, especially for young girls, and I just want them to feel like they are capable of doing anything."

And for those girls who only feel validated through social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter — just to name a few — Gomez doesn't want them to dwell on that.

"I just hope they know they're worth more than an Instagram like, and they're worth more than a comment on any other social platforms," the 24-year-old former Disney Channel star said.

Step Up believes all girls should have the opportunity to reach their full potential, and helps those from under-resourced communities do so by empowering them to become more confident, college-bound, and career-focused — resulting in them emerging as a professional woman.

"I hope that our girls see themselves in Selena because I think she sees herself in them," Jenni Luke, Step Up CEO, said. "And that they really understand if they get clear on who they are and what they want out of their life, that there's a whole world of people willing to help them make that happen and that these types of things do come true."
