Selena Gomez Had A Beautiful Response For Her Instagram Haters’ ‘Ugly’ Comments

Sending a message in style.

While New York Fashion Week often serves as an outlet for creative expression beyond the runway, Selena Gomez's hairstyle made more than a fashion statement. By wearing the word "UGLY" bejeweled along the side of her head, the singer and actress also made a personal statement, as this subtle act quietly, yet profoundly, put her haters on blast for leaving awful comments on her Instagram account each day.

Gomez's gesture specifically calls out controversial designer Stefano Gabbana, who called the former Disney star so "ugly" in Italian on Instagram earlier this year. When The Catwalk Italia's Instagram account asked its followers to choose their favorite of five Gomez red carpet looks, Gabbana commented "E' proprio brutta!!!" which roughly translates to to "She's really ugly!!!"

As Ariana Marsh of Elite Daily wrote, "The best thing about Gomez's response is that it was neither vicious nor rude nor vindictive. It was a rather funny, not to mention chic, way to show Gabbana that his nasty words and opinions meant very little to her to the point of being something to joke about. Gomez has certainly got chops but she's got a great sense of humor, too."

Having faced her fair share of public scrutiny, Gomez has become an advocate for self-care and self-love, noting that the hateful comments that often flood her Instagram comments no longer have any impact on who she is and how she sees herself.

"I feel like I'm one of those people," she recently told Footwear News, admitting that outside criticism has diminished her body confidence in the past. "I actually am one of those people. I understand and I get what they're feeling and what they are afraid of. It's all about how you feel at the end of the day. That's my approach to myself — seeing it's not okay that I'm not accepted, that I'm different from anybody else."

Of course, this isn't the first time Gomez has slammed her haters with subtle sophistication. In March, shortly after paparazzi released photographs of Gomez on vacation in Sydney, trolls quickly pounced, calling her "thick" and "pregnant." However, instead of biting back, Gomez ultimately posted a light-hearted, body positive video that promoted self-care.

"The beauty myth — an obsession with physical perfection that traps [a] modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of flawless beauty," Gomez wrote. "I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone. Wind in her sails."

It's easy to let trolls' hurtful words bring you down, especially since the guise of anonymity empowers the worst offenders to be meaner than they might otherwise be. But, in such instances, we must all look to role models like Gomez, who consistently uses her platform to lift others up, not tear them down. We are all beautiful in our own unique ways and we're all deserving of love.
