Meet The Woman That Selena Gomez Says Is The Embodiment Of The American Dream

"As a nation of immigrants, the country is filled with those who believe in the American Dream."

Selena Gomez, the actor, singer and UNICEF ambassador, honored United We Dream co-founder Cristina Jiménez in a piece written for the annual TIME 100 list.

Gomez, who has been outspoken about political issues, wrote a moving tribute to Jiménez where she gave a brief bio of her life and explained Jiménez's role in fighting for undocumented immigrants. The short tribute was published alongside 99 other of TIME's most influential people of 2018.

"As a nation of immigrants, the country is filled with those who believe in the American Dream: the ideal that everyone should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work and determination," Gomez wrote. "Cristina Jiménez is the American Dream."

Jiménez, who is from Ecuador, moved to Queens at the age of 13 and lived in the United States as an undocumented immigrant for many years. You can read more about her in Gomez's essay here
