'James Bond' Legend And Lifelong Humanitarian Roger Moore Dies At 89

007 forever.

The world is feeling a bit shaken and stirred due to the news that English actor and humanitarian Roger Moore — whose stint playing the suave spy James Bond is the longest of all the big-screen iterations — has passed away. The English actor was 89.

Moore's three children delivered the news this morning, May 23, writing on Twitter: "With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated." A lengthier statement revealed that he'd died in Switzerland after having fought "a short but brave battle with cancer."

It also acknowledged Moore's other films and TV shows as well as his "passionate work with UNICEF which he considered to be his greatest achievement." They thanked their father for being himself and for what he meant to many other people, turned their attention to his wife Kristina, and announced that there will be a private funeral in Monaco per their father's wishes.

Moore's time as James Bond — sandwiched between Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton — included the films: 1973's Live and Let Die, 1974's The Man with the Golden Gun, 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me, 1979's Moonraker, 1981's For Your Eyes Only, 1983's Octopussy, and 1985's A View to a Kill. He is also known for TV roles on Ivanhoe, Maverick, and The Saint.

In addition to acting, Moore became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1991 — after being introduced to the organization by friend Audrey Hepburn — and focused on children's issues. He would travel around the world to raise awareness, drum up support, and encourage donations to help those in need. Moore was awarded the title of Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1999 thanks to his charity work.

Here is just a sampling of social media reactions to Moore's passing:
