A Terminally Ill Fan Asked An Avenger For Help, And Robert Downey Jr. Answered The Call

"Iron Man, if you see this, I really, really need your help."

No true hero can resist the call of someone in need. So when Scottish Avengers superfan Aaron Hunter — who suffers from a rare terminal disease — issued a call for help, it wasn't surprising that it was answered. What was surprising was that his favorite superhero, Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr., not only answered the call but also did something to help Aaron and others with the same condition.

Aaron, who resides in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, first sent out the message to Downey in January 2017 with a video message on Twitter. Surrounded by Avengers toys and collectibles, the little boy makes his plea to the camera. "My name is Aaron Hunter, and I need to speak to Iron Man," he says in the video. "Iron Man, if you see this, I really, really need your help."

Aaron suffers from the rare disease Rapid-Onset Obesity with Hypothalamic Dysfunction, Hypoventilation, and Autonomic Dysregulation (ROHHAD) and, rather than ask for a meeting with the star, he instead wanted to raise awareness and money to help eventually find a cure. He emphasizes this in the video, saying, "Some of my friends with ROHHAD have died. I don't want any more of my friends to die."

A few months later, Aaron actually got to talk with Downey over FaceTime. He expressed his joy about the call, saying that it was the "best day of [his] life." Of course, that distinction has probably changed, as Downey posted a picture of himself and Aaron to his personal Instagram page on March 24. But that wasn't all. The Avengers: Infinity War actor also enlisted the help of his charity, Random Acts Fund, to create a giveaway opportunity for Marvel fans to win a trip to Hollywood for the Avengers: Infinity War premiere, the proceeds from which will go toward the ROHHAD Association

The big gesture wasn't lost on the 8-year-old's mother, who posted her gratitude on Facebook.

"This memory will never leave us, it has been magical. We have never seen Aaron this happy until now," she wrote. "His big heart is full of HOPE! And the best is yet to come with the help this will bring all of the children fighting ROHHAD as Robert [fulfills] Aaron's wish in full. Special thanks to Robert Downey Jr and Team Downey for their incredible support and promise to help. The hope all the families now have would not be happening without YOU."
