17 Striking Photos That Capture The Power Of The National School Walkout

Students showed up to the nationwide protest with signs, speeches, and courage in tow.

Across the United States on March 14, students took part in Women's March Youth Empower's ENOUGH! National School Walkout — and these photos capture the power of the event. The walkout, done both in remembrance of the 17 lives lost in the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., and to end gun violence, saw more than 2,500 schools in the U.S. participate as the nation's youth demanded more be done by the powers that be.

Many of the participants came with signs, some clever ("And the NRA would['ve] gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling kids," one read) and some heartbreaking (one student's read, "As a black boy, I hope one I day I have as many rights as a gun"). Others huddled together with their friends as they stood in solidarity with the thousands. Some even made speeches of encouragement to their fellow demonstrators. All of them, however, exhibited a courage that too rarely associated with our country's youth in popular media.

Though the demonstration only lasted for 17 minutes, from 10 a.m. to 10:17 a.m., the student's activism and message will probably echo for years to come. Here are some of the walkout's most memorable images.
