Nurses Went Against Hospital Rules To Fulfill A Dying Man's Last Wish

"It was a very cozy and relaxed atmosphere."

When Carsten Flemming Hansen was admitted to the hospital in Denmark last week because of an aortic aneurysm and internal bleeding, he was deemed too ill for surgery. The 75-year-old was told he'd only have days or hours left to live. After hearing the news, Hansen made his last wish.

And nurses at the Aarhus University Hospital obliged, despite having to go against hospital regulations to fulfill the man's request.

The hospital wrote on its Facebook page that Hansen requested to watch the sun set while enjoying a glass of white wine and a cigarette. They explained that despite there being a strict "no smoking on hospital grounds" rule, the family and nurses came to the conclusion that this occasion was an exception.

The translation reads,

"A dignified death at the hospital: Today, Carsten Flemming Hansen died quietly at Aarhus University Hospital. A few days before he was hospitalized when an aortic aneurysm and internal bleeding; and when he was deemed already too sick to get the surgery, it would be a matter of a few hours or days before he would die of the internal bleeding. Which is why his last wish was to have a Green L.A. cigarette and a glass of white wine. Now there's no smoking in the hospital, but the nurses in the hospital's Karkirurgisk corridor and the family agreed that this situation was what Carsten Hansen wants and it was more important than the treatment, prevention, and smoking rules. Therefore, Carsten Hansen was wheeled onto a balcony where he sat with family and enjoyed the cigarette, a cool glass of white wine, and a beautiful sunset."

The Guardian reports that nurse Rikke Kvist described the bittersweet moment as very relaxed and what Hansen wanted. "It was a very cozy and relaxed atmosphere."

The septuagenarian ended up passing away shortly after.
