Nicole Kidman Used Her Emmys Acceptance Speech To Speak Out Against Domestic Violence

"Sometimes when you're acting, you get a chance to bring a bigger message."

On Sunday night, Nicole Kidman won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in HBO's Big Little Lies. She used the opportunity to bring attention to an important issue that is addressed in the series — domestic violence.

Kidman began her speech by telling her co-star and fellow nominee Reese Witherspoon, "I share this with you. Without you, I would not be standing up here."

She went on to acknowledge her two young daughters and husband Keith Urban for their sacrifices in spending time away from her while she works. "I want my little girls to have this on their shelf, and to look at it and go, 'Every time my mama didn't put me to bed, it's because of this. I got something!'"

But there was something else she wanted her daughters to take away from her win. "Also, I want them to know that sometimes when you're acting, you get a chance to bring a bigger message, and this is their contribution ... We shone a light on domestic abuse."

In Big Little Lies, Kidman portrayed a character in an abusive marriage. The actress chose not to use a body double for many of the show's violent scenes, one of which she says left her "humiliated and devastated."

"They're upset, they're disturbed," Kidman told Vogue of how people have responded to the storyline. "They say they know people, they know of people that have been through that. They want to understand why; they want to ask what Celeste is thinking, feeling."

"It is a complicated, insidious disease," she said in her Emmys speech. "It exists, far more than we allow ourselves to know. It is filled with shame and secrecy, and by you acknowledging me with this award it shines a light on it even more, so thank you, thank you, I bow down to you."
