Nicki Minaj Shows Why Being Single Can Sometimes Be The Best Thing For You

"I went through a moment where I got to know myself again [...] "

For entertainer Nicki Minaj, being single for the first time in her life meant she finally had the opportunity to find herself — and her experience is one everyone should understand.

Minaj, who's set to release her new album, Queen, in August, spoke with Elle magazine about her 4-year hiatus, finding herself as a rapper again, and how finally being single affected her life, among other topics.

"I went through a moment where I got to know myself again, and then I went through a moment where I got to know myself as the rapper again. And then I locked [myself] in the studio"— see? —"and I didn't want to leave," Minaj told the publication. "Spiritually, I've experienced more growth in the last six months of my life, of my career, than I have in the last eight years."

When asked why she's experienced so much growth, Minaj responded: "It's the first time in my life I've ever been single."

"I remember feeling like I could do anything at one time in my life ... and somewhere along the line, I just started second guessing myself, for whatever reason," Minaj said. "As soon as I realized that I could actually live and breathe, and eat and sleep, and walk and talk without having a boyfriend, something clicked in me."

"Becoming single ... was one of the things that made me feel strong and powerful," she said, emphasizing that she is an independent woman.

Minaj's interview handles a lot of other topics, but we think her message surrounding dating and relationships is an important one.

In 2017, DeVon Franklin echoed why being single is great during an appearance on The Talk: "... Here's the other thing ... too often, people say, 'Oh, why are you single?' as if something's wrong with you," Franklin said. "No, I'm single 'cause everything's right for me. ... So I'm not right for everybody. So I'm gonna stay single until the right person shows up."

So whether you're single or in a relationship, remember that at the end of the day, you should never forget to love yourself.
