One Library’s New Project Will Have You Visiting Instagram For More Than Selfies

BRB ... we have a book to read.

For those who've had the opportunity to visit the New York Public Library, you know that it's a spectacular spot filled with more than 55 million items for book lovers to enjoy. In fact, it's the nation's largest public library system.

And this week, NYPL announced on Instagram that it would start sharing the full text of classic books through Instagram Stories in a project called "Insta Novels." The library teamed up with the independent advertising and creative agency Mother in New York to put it all together.

NYPL explains on Instagram that the process is "a reimagining of Instagram Stories to provide access to some of the most iconic stories ever written."

On Wednesday, the NYPL released part 1 of its first Insta Novel: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Users can click through the library's story and flip through the pages, which are complete with animated and interactive graphics as well as sound to make the reading experience more engaging. On each page, there's also a place to place your thumb, which will keep the story from moving along to the next page. For those who miss the stories, the novels will be saved for viewing through the library's Instagram Highlights section.

"Instagram unknowingly created the perfect bookshelf for this new kind of online novel. From the way you turn the pages, to where you rest your thumb while reading, the experience is already unmistakably like reading a paperback novel," Corinna Falusi, partner and chief creative officer of Mother in New York, said in a press release.

"How many ways can I tell you how much I love this. What an amazing idea," one person commented on NYPL's Instagram.

"This is the coolest!!!" another person wrote.

In the coming months, the library will also be releasing The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.

"This project is directly in line with the Library's mission is to make the world's knowledge accessible to all," said Carrie Welch, the New York Public Library's chief of External Relations. "It's appropriate that one of the works we're using is The Metamorphosis, because in collaboration with Mother, we are completely transforming the way people look at this popular social media platform, and reimagining the way people access the classics."

So, rather than click through countless selfies and photos from the people you're following, perhaps now you can use your free time on social media to read a classic novel.
