Mindy Kaling Had Plenty Of Reasons To Love 'Crazy Rich Asians,' But This One Was Special

"I was bawling."

Since its release last month, Crazy Rich Asians has been a hit at the box office, started important conversations about representation, and inspired some emotional responses from viewers. Now we can add Mindy Kaling's name to that list.

On Monday, Kaling shared a funny and sweet Twitter thread in which she shared her thoughts on the film as a "Medium Rich South Asian thot." That included a tweet praising star Constance Wu, and how her character redefined the stereotypical romantic comedy lead. Wu responded with thanks.

Kaling also shared her admiration for the film's settings and costumes, as well as how much she enjoyed being "immersed in so much Asian attractiveness," particularly the sight of "so many beautiful happy Asian couples."

But the aspect of the film that was most emotional for Kaling was the "powerful statement about single moms and their bonds with their daughters," as shown through Wu's character Rachel and her mother. "I was bawling," Kaling wrote. "Crazy Ugly Crying From Me."

As HuffPost points out, Kaling herself is a single mother, having given birth to baby daughter Katherine in December. So it makes sense that this storyline would resonate with her so much.

Model Chrissy Teigen recently shared her own thoughts on watching the film with her young daughter Luna. "You never know how much you miss being represented on screen until you actually see what it's like to be represented," she wrote. "And represented by all different types of characters with all different types of personalities, just like any other great movie."

As Constance Wu herself pointed out on Twitter before the movie's release, Crazy Rich Asians is the first major Hollywood film in 25 years "to center an Asian American's story." It's heartwarming to see how so many moviegoers, famous or not, have responded to it.
