This Couple’s Wedding Was Just Like Any Other Until You Find Out Where It Happened

"It's a statement that love has no borders."

Every year, the "Door of Hope" opens on the Mexico-United States border for about an hour. And during that brief moment this past Saturday, a Mexican-American couple had a symbolic wedding on the border.

Evelia Reyes, a Mexican woman, was wed to Brian Houston, an American from San Diego, while family, friends and border patrol agents looked on. The wedding took place at the Border Field State Park in San Diego, the "only federally designated binational meeting place along the border between the U.S. and Mexico," according to The Washington Post.

"It's a statement that love has no borders," Houston said to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "Even though we are divided by a giant fence here, we can still love each other on both sides of the fence."

Reyes couldn't enter the U.S. legally and Houston said he couldn't go to Tijuana, so the two decided to hold their wedding during the pre-planned opening of the gate, which has only happened six times since 2013.

Reyes and Houston speak by phone daily and are working with an immigration attorney to get Reyes into the United States legally. During the ceremony, some family members met each other in person for the very first time.

The ceremony, which sought to unite a Mexican and American family, was a clear nod to the tension that currently exists on the border. Over the weekend, a border patrol agent was killed on duty in Van Horn, Texas. After reports of the agent's death surfaced, President Donald Trump renewed promises to build a wall along the border. Not far from where the ceremony was held, just 15 miles down the road, are eight of the prototypes for the proposed border wall between Mexico and the United States.

Enrique Morones, the executive director of the Border Angels, helped organize Saturday's wedding.

"While some people want to build walls, we want to open doors," he told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
