How Meghan Markle Is Helping A London Community Come Together With A Cookbook

"I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen."

Giving back has always been an important thing for Meghan Markle. Now, though, she can do it on a much bigger platform and has now taken part in her first charitable act since becoming Duchess of Sussex: writing the foreword to a very special cookbook.

Together: Our Community Cookbook was created by the female cooks who run The Hubb, a community kitchen, at Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre in London. The word "hubb" is in the name because that word means "love" in Arabic, and that's exactly what these women — and others affected by the Grenfell Tower fire disaster — needed.

The Grenfell Tower fire — which occurred on June 14, 2017 — resulted in the death of more than 70 people and hundreds more displaced. Londoners came together to support one another after this tragedy from the Muslim neighbors members who first noticed the fire, the firefighters who responded to save lives, and the celebrities such as Adele who offered their support. There was even a charity single.

"I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen; it is a place for women to laugh, greive, cry and cook together," Markle, who has been visiting The Hubb since January, writes in the foreword. "Melding cultural identities under a shared roof, it creates a space to feel a sense of normalcy — in its simplest form, the universal need to connect, nurture, and commune through food, through crisis or joy — something we can all relate to."

There's a video featuring Markle helping out at The Hubb — including voiceover and interviews with the ladies who run it. Markle notes that proceeds from the sale of Together, which includes more than 50 of the multicultural recipes, will help The Hubb "thrive and keep the global spirit of community alive" and operate a full seven days a week and widen their reach so they can continue to help those in their community.
