Meek Mill Is Teaming Up With Amazon To Shine A Light On The Criminal Justice System

"Something is not working."

Rapper Meek Mill is ready to make a difference in the criminal justice system, and it's all starting with a docuseries.

Meek is teaming up with Amazon and Jay-Z's Roc Nation to create this currently untitled project after just serving time in jail for violating probation back in November 2017. The six-part series will follow Meek through his life, career, and experience with the criminal justice system to bring awareness to the effects probations have on people of color. The series will premiere in 2019, according to Deadline.

Issues regarding the criminal justice system and people of color aren't new in mainstream media, especially in the U.S. The United States has more than 20 percent of world's prison population despite having only 5 percent of the world's population, making it the "world's largest jailer," the ACLU reports.

In an upcoming interview with NBC News' Lester Holt on May 6, Meek touches on this issue, noting that he believes the criminal justice system is built to keep people of color behind bars.

"I had eight years of probation, and it turned into 16 years of probation," Meek said in the interview. "Something is not working."

The "Dreams and Nightmares" rapper was released from prison in April, and has since been seen hanging out with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin, among others.

Last year, Jay-Z penned an op-ed for The New York Times talking about Meek's case and the justice system. "It's time we highlight the random ways people trapped in the criminal justice system are punished every day," he wrote. "The system treats them as a danger to society, consistently monitors and follows them for any minor infraction — with the goal of putting them back in prison."
