McDonald's Is Flipping Its Arches Upside Down — Here's Why

No, you're not seeing things. That McDonald's "M" really is upside down.

In Lynwood, California, a local McDonald's owner named Patricia Williams turned the restaurant's iconic arch upside down to honor International Women's Day. The owner has the support of the franchise and its Chief Diversity Officer, who is leading the way to recognize women on March 8.  

"For the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches for International Women's Day in honor of the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere and especially in our restaurants," Wendy Lewis, McDonald's Chief Diversity Officer, said in a statement provided to A Plus. "From restaurant crew and management to our C-suite of senior leadership, women play invaluable roles at all levels and together with our independent franchise owners we're committed to their success."

Across the country, there will be hundreds of locations celebrating the day by distributing packaging with the upside inverted arch. 100 restaurants are also receiving special shirts and the logo is being changed on all of the company's social media channels.

"We have a long history of supporting women in the workplace, giving them the opportunity to grow and succeed," McDonald's spokesperson Lauren Altmin told A Plus. "In the U.S. we take pride in our diversity and we are proud to share that today, six out of 10 restaurant managers are women."

Other brands are also stepping up to honor women as well. Brawny is once again replacing its buff, lumberjack-like icon with a woman in honor of their #StrengthHasNoGender movement. Johnnie Walker, the whiskey company, is selling a limited edition "Jane Walker" for all of March. It's also donating a dollar made off every bottle to organizations supporting women. 

Starbucks and Barbie are also honoring women with special campaigns.
