What This GOP Lawmaker Found Out When She Asked Her Followers About Obamacare

The fight on Capitol Hill over Obamacare is just beginning.

The tussle over whether to retain or repeal Obamacare has taken on renewed partisan urgency as the 115th Congress gears up for what's sure to be an impassioned fight on Capitol Hill. On Wednesday, President Obama met with Democrats while Vice President-elect Mike Pence met with Republicans to discuss how best to defeat the other party's efforts regarding the Affordable Care Act.

GOP lawmakers are facing the question of how best to repeal the legislation — a move that could have devastating effects on those who have come to rely on it for health care — as well as replace it.

On Tuesday, Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn, who is part of President-elect Donald Trump's transition team, took to Twitter to ask her followers about Obamacare. Her tweet included a poll, and asked, "Do you support the repeal of Obamacare? RT if you do, and share what you want to see as the replacement."

24 hours later after the results came in, it turned out that a vast majority of people who came across her tweet opposed repealing the ACA. Of the 7,968 people who responded to her poll, 84 percent said "no."

Lawmakers' positions on Obamacare are almost decisively split down party lines. Democrats see it as part of Obama's legacy, while Republicans have attempted over the years to repeal it. And now with a commanding majority in Congress and Trump's impending move into the White House, they finally have a realistic shot at doing so.

But in the face of possible success at repealing Obamacare, Republicans have yet to come up with a strategy to maintain its benefits for millions of Americans. When asked about their plan, Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters that the GOP has a "plan to replace it. We have plenty of ideas to replace it," though he did not elaborate.
