Every Model Strutting In This Historic NYFW Show Is Transgender

"This was an opportunity for their presence to be undeniable and reinforce that trans is beautiful.”

Every season, New York Fashion Week (NYFW) wows us with the newest trends in fashion and beauty, but it's also an opportunity for designers to make a statement right there on the runways, whether it be about politics, diversity, aesthetics, or anything else. This year, for example, designer Claudia Li cast 35 Asian models for her Spring 2019 show to show the diversity of Asian women.

Designer Marco Morante — of the underwear brand Marco Marco — is also making a statement this year. For his Collection Seven show, he chose models who are transgender to walk the runway.  The 34 models selected include Gigi Gorgeous, Carmen Carrera, Geena Rocero, and Aydian Dowling, among others.

"Although I have always had trans and non-binary people in my shows, it became apparent to me that their presence was often overshadowed by cis gay men or cis gay men in drag," Morante told Mic. "I wanted to create a space to celebrate trans bodies. This was an opportunity for their presence to be undeniable and reinforce that trans is beautiful."

"There's an ongoing needed conversation of inclusion in the past fashion seasons that borderlines on tokenism," Rocero told Mic. "But the real tea is that being trans is not a trend; it is life, beauty, and power."

Transparent actress Trace Lysette, who also walked in the show, posted to Twitter:

Laverne Cox, who attended the show, took to Instagram to share her thoughts.

"When I started #TransIsBeautiful 3 years ago, I wanted it to be a way for trans folks to celebrate what makes us uniquely and beautifully trans. It wasn't about how cis we can look but rather about celebrating those things about us that are uniquely and beautifully trans. The [Marco Marco show] last night, which featured a cast of all trans models, feels like yet another fulfillment of the empowerment of trans beauty this hashtag is meant to celebrate and engender. Thank you to everyone who has used this hashtag to empower yourselves and each other. Congratulations to everyone in the historic Marco Marco Show last night."

It was "the most trans men ever assembled on a NYFW runway," Mic reports.

Many shared their footage from the show on social media to document the historic event.

We love that the Marco Marco show celebrated the transgender community in such a beautiful and powerful way, and we hope it inspires other industries to be more inclusive in their own ways, too.
