Lush Opens The World's First 'Naked' Shop, Saying Goodbye To Plastic Packaging

Plastic pollution is a global problem.

As most of us know, plastic is a problem. The United States alone uses 500 million straws every single day. What's more, 8 million tons of plastic enter our oceans every year. Plastic pollution is a global problem and there are many campaigns and countries stepping up to reduce our waste.

We've recently heard about Saltwater Brewery launching an environmentally-friendly version of the plastic rings typically used to hold canned beverages together. And it was reported that McDonald's in the U.K. will replace plastic straws with paper. What's more, H&M is recycling plastic waste by turning it into clothing.

Most recently, cosmetic company Lush has hit another milestone by launching the world's first "naked" shop in Milan, Italy.

The store is 100-square-meters and split across two levels — and there's no plastic packaging on any of the products, according to Fashion Network.

The shop opened its doors on June 1 and is more than just a new store experience. Per the press release, Lush reports that the "naked" store will feature events, workshops, and even film screenings with the goal of educating customers and opening up a dialogue about a future where we do not need plastic.

Since Lush launched 23 years ago, the company has been dedicated to different ethical causes, including fair trade, animal rights, equality, and protecting the environment. 

In other Lush stores, the brand offers a selection of "naked" products including solid shampoo bars, naked shower gels, and packaging-free soaps. The company reports that over 40 percent of the "AYR product range" is naked, aka package-free.

Lush states that the solid shampoo bars alone save close to 6 million plastic bottles per year.

In addition to the naked store launch, Lush is commemorating World Oceans Day (June 8) with the launch of a campaign that highlights how single-use plastic products are impacting our oceans. The campaign launches online June 8 online and June 18 in stores.

As part of the campaign, Lush is releasing a Turtle Jelly Bomb (pictured below). It's mean to bring attention to the threat sea turtles face from plastic pollution.
