Lea Michele Paid Touching Tribute To Cory Monteith Five Years After His Death

The "Glee" stars were dating at the time.

Five years after Glee actor Cory Monteith passed away, his co-star and then-girlfriend Lea Michele paid beautiful tribute to him on social media. The actress posted a photo of the sun over the ocean to both Twitter and Instagram, and shared touching quote to accompany it.

"There are some who bring a light so great to the world, that even after they have gone, the light remains," Michele posted on Friday. The tweet has received more than 13,000 retweets and 41,000 likes, showing just how many people remember and miss the late actor, who died at age 31.

As The Mirror points out, Michele and Monteith started dating in 2011, during their time filming Glee, and were still together when Monteith passed away. The actor had struggled with substance abuse, and reportedly died from a toxic mixture of heroin and alcohol.

Michele, now 31, has paid tribute to Monteith every year since his death, even as she has gone on to see other people. Last year, she posted a sweet photo of the two of them to Instagram and wrote, "4 years and it still feels like yesterday.. love you more C." PopSugar points out that the actress also has a tattoo of the number five in tribute to Monteith's character Finn. (It was the number on his football jersey.)

Following Monteith's death, his character Finn was mourned on the show, although the cause of the character's death was not revealed. The series went on for two seasons without him.

In 2013, less than a month after Monteith's death, Michele accepted the Best TV Actress in a Comedy award at the Teen Choice Awards. She gave an emotional speech thanking fans for their support and paying tribute to Monteith.

"For all of you out there who loved and admired Cory as much as I did, I wanted to promise that with your love, we're going to get through this together," she said. "He was very special to me, and also to the world, and we were very lucky to witness his incredible talent, his handsome smile, and his beautiful, beautiful heart."
