Kristen Bell Has A Very Special Trick To Get Her Kids To Share How Their Days Went

"It's a nice way to show you love someone."

Over the years, Kristen Bell has been a source of great advice: she's offered a parenting hack to keep your kids out of traffic, advice for those dealing with mental illness, ways to respond to your kids' teachers, and more.

Now, in an interview with PopSugar promoting her partnership with Old Navy and Omaze on a back-to-school shopping spree contest, Bell opens up about how gets her children to talk about their day.

PopSugar explains that Bell felt that her children would always give her short responses when she asked them how their days went at school. Bell went on to explain that sometimes kids don't like to talk about these things "because they want to live in the moment."

But she's come up with a solution.

"Everything I ask my children to do in life, I explain to them why," Bell says. She adds that she said to her children:

"Do you know why we ask you about your day? I ask you about your day and I ask Daddy about his day because we've been separated for a few hours and I wonder how you're feeling . . . if you experienced something today you want to talk about. Also because I'm interested and it gives us a chance to reconnect to each other. That's why people ask one another about their day. It also makes the other person that's being asked feel very good and valued. It's a nice way to show you love someone.'"

By doing this, Bell says her children have learned that these questions have real meaning behind them and they're now motivated to answer.

"My kids don't brush me off. They say, 'It was really good, how was your day?'" she says. "They actually ask me how my day was."

And so, instigating these practices may help to create a better bond between child and parent. Of course, everyone parents differently, but perhaps Bell's advice will help those who are looking to encourage more open communication with their kids on a daily basis.
