Following Kate Spade's Passing, The Company Pledges To Donate $1 Million To Mental Health Organizations

"We hope that our support will shed even more light on the disease."

On June 5, it was reported that fashion designer Kate Spade had passed away at the age of 55 in what was later deemed a suicide by the New York City medical examiner. Her passing sparked a conversation about mental health, and the ways we need to bring more awareness to this issue that affects so many.

Spade's brother-in-law actor David Spade donated $100,000 to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in an effort to support those affected by mental health conditions.

Today, the Kate Spade company pledged to donate $1 million in support of mental health organizations.

The brand made the announcement on Twitter that its foundation will be donating to raise awareness for mental health beginning with a $250,000 donation to Crisis Text Line, a free 24/7 line for those in crisis to text and speak with a trained crisis counselor.

What's more, the Kate Spade company will match up to $100,000 in public donations made to the organization from June 20 to 29, 2018.

Spade has not been affiliated with her namesake company since 2007 after she sold her remaining shares, but the company wants to pay tribute to its founder.

Racked reported that Kate Spade CEO Anna Bakst said in a statement, "Mental illness does not discriminate; it is complicated and difficult to diagnose and can often be life-threatening."

"We hope that our support will shed even more light on the disease and encourage those who suffer from mental health issues to seek help. Collectively, we must all do more."

Kate Spade's company is also making policies to ensure the well-being of its employees. Fashionista reported that the brand will host a Global Mental Health Awareness Day for its employees as part of a wellness program.

Bakst also highlighted the support fans of the brand have provided following Spade's passing, "The outpouring of love on social media and in our shops from customers of all ages has been overwhelming and moving," she stated. "It is such a beautiful reflection of how much Kate was loved."
