Jordin Sparks' 'Hidden Message' During The National Anthem Has Fans Talking

And she took a passage from the Bible to make her point.

Jordin Sparks was front and center to sing the national anthem during ESPN's Monday Night Football. But her appearance at the game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Arizona Cardinals is making headlines for more than her stellar voice — it's also for the hidden message written on her left hand. Some view this as a silent protest and for speaking up in a loud way despite not saying anything at all.

The American Idol season 6 winner was in her home state for the occasion — repping with a jersey to show support — and she began singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" after the Cowboys and team owner Jerry Jones took a knee on the field. Both teams subsequently locked arms for the performance and, when the camera zoomed in on Sparks, there was a passage from the Bible written on the hand holding the microphone.

The verse in question was Proverbs 31:8-9 and there was no further explanation as to why it was written there. That's probably because the Bible's words — whether you are Christian or not — speak volumes: "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

The #TakeAKnee movement began with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and current free agent Colin Kaepernick not standing up during the national anthem during the 2016 season as a protest against police brutality against people of color. This act has since spread throughout the NFL and other sports, getting a new life after some controversial statements and tweets from President Donald Trump this past weekend.

What Sparks did was pretty genius, as The Root points out. This is clearly a subtle-yet-powerful show of support for what Kaepernick's protest stood for in addition to people's First Amendment right to make a statement. By using a book held near and dear by many conservatives, the group likely to be most offended by players not standing for the national anthem, it speaks their language and provides a stance that would probably be challenging to argue against.
