As Soon As He Won The WWE Championship, John Cena Made This Young Fan's Dream Come True

Cena has granted more than 500 wishes through the Make-A-Wish program.

Professional wrestler John Cena made history Sunday night at the Royal Rumble when he beat A.J. Styles and won his 16th WWE Championship, tying Ric Flair's record. Almost immediately, he jumped out of the ring, over the barrier, and into the crowd, where he celebrated his win with a kid in the Make-A-Wish program.

After shaking the young fan's hand, Cena draped the championship belt over his shoulder and posed with him. The fan went home with a high-five, a wristband, and, according to Sports Illustrated, "a shirt filled with autographs." The smile on his face was heartwarming.

"John Cena, in one of the greatest moments of his career, takes some time to make a young man's day," said an announcer for the event.

Cena has long supported the Make-A-Wish Foundation, granting more wishes for children battling life-threatening medical conditions than any other celebrity. He granted his first wish in 2004 and has gone on to serve on the Wish Ambassador Council. In 2009, he received the Make-A-Wish Chris Greicius Celebrity Award.

In 2015, Cena granted his 500th wish when he met 8-year-old Rocco from New York, who was battling leukemia. According to the Make-A-Wish website, the wrestler's motto "Never give up" helped Rocco stay positive. Cena was also the first to reach 300 and 400 wishes, making him a champion in the ring and out of it.

"I just drop everything," Cena said of his devotion to the program, according to ESPN. "If I can offer a fantastic experience, I'll be first in line to do my part."

He said he receives thank-you letters from families of children he's met, including some who have sadly passed away.

Make-A-Wish CEO David Williams shared his appreciation for Cena's commitment with ESPN, explaining why the wrestler is so important to so many kids in the program: "He's an entertainer, but he's a fighter. Ultimately, these kids are fighting, just fighting a different kind of battle. That's what resonates so much with these kids."
