John Boyega Visited Kids At His Former School To Help Them 'Train Like A Jedi'

It's part of a campaign to get kids moving.

Students at John Boyega's former primary school in London were surprised when the Star Wars actor paid them a visit this week. According to ITV News, his appearance was part of a new program from Public Health England's (PHE) Change4Life campaign called "Train Like a Jedi," launched with Disney UK.

The initiative is meant to combat childhood obesity by getting kids moving. British taekwondo athlete and Olympic gold medalist Jade Jones appears in a video — along with Star Wars droid BB-8 — in which she leads kids in a series of Jedi-inspired moves. According to the website, new games will be revealed each week to keep kids moving throughout summer.

Jones appeared with Boyega at his former school to lead a workout in person. "I hope that through this new programme we can inspire a new generation to move more by showing kids that physical activity can be really fun," the athlete said of the initiative.

"When I saw John Boyega, I thought it wasn't him. I thought it was a robot," one student said in an ITV video from the surprise visit. Another said, "I thought I was living in a dream. I thought I didn't wake up this morning."

ITV cites PHE's statistics that only 23 percent of boys and 20 percent of girls between the ages of 5 and 15 get their recommended hour of daily physical activity. In 2016, U.K. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt called childhood obesity a "national emergency."

"So good to be here. This is my old primary school," Boyega told the kids. "I used to come here, and obviously left in year six, that was the last time I was here, when I was crying my eyes out, ready to go into secondary school."

It's not the only way Boyega has kept in touch with his roots since becoming a star. Last year, he revealed that he bought his parents a house after making it big, calling it "giving back to my king and my queen." He also previously brought the magic of Star Wars to a children's hospital by visiting in costume as Finn.
