Jennifer Hudson And Ariana Grande Closed 'Hairspray Live!' With An Uplifting And Timely Duet

"I know we've come so far / But we've got so far to go."

NBC continued its annual live musical tradition Wednesday night with an electrifying production of Hairspray Live! As many viewers noted on Twitter during the broadcast, the show felt like an appropriate and necessary choice in a frequently divisive and difficult year. The story, set in 1960s Baltimore, addresses issues such as race and body image, and ultimately sends a message of unity.

One song which felt especially timely is "Come So Far (Got So Far to Go)," which was originally written for the 2007 movie adaptation. Two of Hairspray Live!'s biggest stars, Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande, joined forces for a powerful duet of the song to close the show while the rest of the cast took a bow.

"I know we've come so far / But we've got so far to go," they sang. "I know the road seems long / But it won't be long 'til it's time to go."

Grande herself pointed out the relevance of the song, and the show as a whole, in a recent interview with E! News. "The message in the song is exactly what we need right now," she said. "Because the hook says, 'We've come so far, but we've got so far to go,' which is exactly where we're at right now. It's exactly why we're supposed to be doing this show right now, cosmically. The world needs to hear it in a fun musical way, it's a message that we need to get out there."
