This 15-Year-Old Gave An Inspiring Speech, And Emphasized One Thing We Can Do To Help Others And Their Health

“Don’t give up, don’t ever give up."

The ESPYs — short for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award — normally recognize the people on the field, in the water, or on the court for their athletic achievements. But one trophy, the Jimmy V Award, goes to someone from the sporting world who has overcome obstacles in their life as well as showed a massive amount of perseverance and determination. This year that honor went to a young man named Jarrius Robertson.

According to Sports Illustrated, the 15-year-old has been battling chronic liver disease — and also has biliary atresia, a rare condition which inhibits physical growth — resulting in 13 surgeries and two liver transplants already. Taking to the stage along with his parents, Jordy Robertson and Patricia Hoyal, Jarrius was full of thanks and inspirational words.

"Don't give up, don't ever give up. These words by Jimmy V I have been living my entire life," Jarrius said. "The past few years have been a blessing for me and my family. I have been doing things I never thought I could do before — and earning the Jimmy V Award tonight is amazing."

Jarrius went on to thank a slew of people in the sports industry before ending up with just his family to acknowledge, saying, "I want to thank them for being by my side and all the sacrifices to get me to where I am now."

After Jarrius finished speaking, his father began making a passionate plea about the importance of organ donations. Jordy spoke about how Jarrius got another chance at life thanks to "an angel" and all of the medical professionals who had a hand in treating his son. He urged people to sign up to become organ donors because "it takes lives to save lives." And you can learn more about becoming an organ donor by visiting this link.
