This Pic Isn't Just Donald Glover And A Fan, It's An Example Of Why Representation Matters

"He said he recognized me from Twitter ..."

It's not often that fans get to meet their idols. But for one comedian and screenwriter, a chance meeting with Donald Glover gave him the opportunity to not only thank the Atlanta creator for inspiring him but also prove exactly why representation matters in every space.

Jaboukie Young-White is making his way in the entertainment world, landing a coveted stand-up spot on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and even getting a Rolling Stone feature. However, a major moment happened for him on March 24 when he met Donald Glover. He quickly snapped a picture with the star and posted it to Twitter. "[I] told him that when [I] found out he wrote for 30 Rock [I] realized black people could write tv," he wrote. "[And] now i'm a screenwriter and he said he recognized me from Twitter." Of course, his Tweet went viral, generating nearly 223,000 likes and 27,000 retweets.

But perhaps the most important thing about the tweet is its message. As the 24-year-old up-and-comer mentioned in the tweet, it was discovering that Glover wrote for the hit NBC series 30 Rock than inspired him to seek out his career path. Now, Young-White is a member of the writing teams for two Netflix series, Big Mouth and American Vandal.

It's been documented that seeing people of the same background or race in a role helps young people imagine themselves doing the same. In fact, writer and actor Lena Waithe made a similar point when speaking on why she wants to see more out actors of color in films and television while appearing on ABC's The View. "We have to be a bit of a beacon of light for those young kids of color who are wondering like, 'Am I weird? Is there something wrong with me?'" she told the show's panel.

It looks like Young-White is taking his light all the way to Hollywood and might even inspire someone else.
