The Internet Is Applauding Harry Styles For These Comments About His Young Fans

"They're our future."

Harry Styles thinks teenage girls deserve to be taken seriously, and he's not going to keep silent about it.

The One Direction star, who recently debuted his first solo music, spoke to Cameron Crowe for the new issue of Rolling Stone. One topic Styles and Crowe touched on in the interview is the singer's fan base, which is made up largely of young women, including teenage girls. When asked if he worries about "proving credibility to an older crowd," Styles gave an answer that has people cheering.

"Who's to say that young girls who like pop music — short for popular, right? — have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy?" he wondered. "That's not up to you to say. Music is something that's always changing. There's no goal posts. Young girls like the Beatles. You gonna tell me they're not serious?"

"They're our future. Our future doctors, lawyers, mothers, presidents, they kind of keep the world going."

"Teenage-girl fans — they don't lie," Styles continued. "If they like you, they're there. They don't act 'too cool.' They like you, and they tell you. Which is sick."

Social media was quick to pick up on Styles' comments, and it looks like he's won over quite a few hearts — or just confirmed what fans already knew about him. Twitter users praised the star for preaching the "truth."

Society's condescending attitude toward teenage girls, especially fangirls, is nothing new, but it's been particularly relevant in recent months, as young women's magazines such as Teen Vogue have become leading sources of political and social commentary — something many have found surprising or even worthy of ridicule.

It's heartening to see Styles add his voice to the conversation and share such passionate respect for a demographic that is all too often dismissed.

Styles' self-titled solo album will be available May 12.
