The Powerpuff Girls Trio Is Adding A New Member And A Splash Of Diversity To Their Ranks

"We have a lot of surprises up our sleeves.”

There's some change a-comin' to The Powerpuff Girls. Soon we'll see a fresh face joining Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup — our favorite crime-fighting byproducts of sugar, spice, everything nice, and an accidental dash of Chemical X — in Townsville. Besides this girl power-filled threesome becoming a foursome, there's another reason to be excited.

Cartoon Network revealed to Entertainment Weekly that an all-new member will enter the fold in the premiere of the five-part movie event titled The Powerpuff Girls: Power of Four. The first installment is set to air Sunday, September 17, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time. While no other information about the newcomer was announced, it didn't take long for the internet to piece together that this fourth member will add a dose of diversity by being Black.

South African singer Toya Delazy — an openly gay artist who actually put a twist on The Powerpuff Girls theme song when the reboot hit South Africa — seemingly announced on Twitter that she would be playing the fourth Powerpuff Girl. "AND JUST LIKE THAT, I BECAME A POWERPUFF GIRL," her tweet reads. "Much love to my @cartoonnetwork for trusting me with this epic job #lifegoals." Delazy has since retweeted articles confirming this news.

Jaime Ondarza, the senior vice president at Turner Broadcasting in Southern Europe and Africa, has reportedly released a statement about Delazy's casting to NME that reads: "Toya is definitely a perfect fit as the fourth Powerpuff Girl. She is confident, bubbly, and quirky, all the values that we are familiar with, love, and appreciate. We have a lot of surprises up our sleeves."

Then, to add further fuel, ComicBook uncovered a Russian sizzle reel that looks super official and shows the four Powerpuff Girls together. The yet-to-be-named newcomer is seen and looks similar to the silhouette in the Cartoon Network teaser. The newbie is larger than the other girls, wears purple, and has some electric blue hair. (You can see her around the 1:42 mark.)

While this will be the first character of color to join the Powerpuff Girls trio, it isn't the first time they got a fourth member. During the show's original run from 1998 to 2005, we saw two different characters temporarily joining the iconic trio: Princess Morbucks and Bunny, both in the second season of the beloved series.
