This Flying, Walking Robot Was Inspired By A Bat

Scary or awesome?

When it comes to imagining possible robot designs, we prefer to imagine the kind that would cook us dinner or do our laundry.

Apparently, not all of us want the same kind of robots. Teams from the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems and the Swiss National Center of Competence in Research premiered a robot yesterday called the DALER (Deployable Air-Land Exploration Robot). Essentially, it is a bat-like robot with wings that transform into spinning crutches tohelp it walk.

And while we'll admit we're more than a little wary about the "Terminator"-tinged future of robot development, this one could actually be quite useful (and important). With its bi-terrestrial design, the bot could fly into area stricken by natural disasters or anywhere there may be victims in need, thus freeing up rescue crews searches and giving them time to perform more and quicker rescues.
